Slip & Slide (2017)

Slip & Slide, video, 31 min. 34 sec.
Excerpt: 3 mins.

An investigation into the materials of ceramics and video with a non-hierarchical approach to form and content. Ceramic artist Janet Macpherson mixes her primary material of slip as I mix her mixing using slide transitions. The slide transitions take on a principal role, turning form into content. The soundtrack of Macpherson singing a combination of traditional British folk songs and her own compositions is suggestive of the larger gallery installation of Macpherson’s ceramic works in the exhibition A Canadian Bestiary, where these songs can be heard wafting softly through the air as you watch the video.

Music performed by Janet Macpherson, mixed by Justin Haynes.

Exhibited at the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, 2017.
